My name is
Kinga Ilyes. I am 27 years old. I am forced to move with
the help of a wheelchair. In November 1994 I suffered an accident at
a gocarting competition. As a consequence my spine cracked and after
being taken to hospital to Csikszereda my spine broke because of
medical carelessness. The spinal column moved along the fracture, more
exactly between the second and the fourth vertebrae and caught in the
spinal cord. This stopped the functions of the motor and sensory
nerves below my chest and thus causing my paralysis. After a week I
underwent a surgery in Budapest and as a consequence my spine was
fixed with plates and screws. As a result my spine which was in a
terrible state was released. In February 1996 the plates were removed.
A month after the first surgery I learnt how to move with the
wheelchair and to do exercises in a rehabilitation centre. Since then
I keep on doing these exercises. I also took part in
physiotherapeutical and acupuntural therapies which led to minor
improvements.
In September 2005 I found out about a certain Chinese neurosurgeon,
Huang Hongyun who achieves some results in this matter by implanting
nerves taken from embryos into people who suffered spine injuries.

The news made me become hopeful again. After getting in touch with him and
sending some data about my state, the doctor decided to operate on me.
The surgery took place on the 4th of July 2007 as the surgeon was
booked for months ahead.
The surgery together with the travel expenses cost 25 000 Dollars
which was the result of the collaboration of many people. Their names
can be found under the Supporters menu. I would like to thank them for
both their material and mental support.
The flight took nine and a half hours to Peking. Everything happened
according to the plan. From the airport a special driver took my
sister and me to the Xishan West Hill hospital. The events took place
in a precise and strict order. The examinations began right on the
first day. In five days the sterilization of the cells and then the
four-hour implantational surgery occured. After two days I was able to
leave the bed for a short period of time. The medical treatment
started afterwards: gymnastics, acupunture, massage and a special
treatment with the help of the bed which could be set up vertically.
After three weeks we left the hospital.
Of course, the essential physical exercises continued after our
homecoming as well. Then I took part in a treatment in the
Rehabilitation Centre from Szekelyudvarhely. Since January 2008 I
have been attending regularly the neuro-rehabilitation classes in
Sopron
(www.neurorehab.hu)
where I participate in a nerve-stimulating therapy where
physiotheraphy is connected with electromagnetic nerve-stimulation.
The signs of my improvements are the followings: my breathing is
better and I am able to feel my body with two centimetres lower than I
used to. Furthermore, on my left leg I can feel such a strong touch as
for example the massage. After the strengthening of the waist, hip and
the femoral muscles I feel their development as well. These small
things are steps towards my final aim.
I am confident that in the future I will be able to share with you
further results and improvements.
Yours faithfully,
Kinga
